Celebrating Cultural diversity in our classroom and school.

The lunchtime art group took it upon themselves to create a piece of artwork that honored the cultural diversity of our classrooms and parish community.

We decided to go with the idea of a sculpture. Every Wednesday lunchtime the art group would get together to research and draw designs.

Over the summer holiday some of these designs were chosen and made into the metal plates.

These metal plates show some of the cultures at our school.

During term 2 and 3 Room 4 took on the challenge to sand and varnish this beautiful piece of wood that my family had donated.

Thomas, Chanel, Stella and Jakob A were very keen to use crystals as part of the design. They are a symbol of light and love.

We finally completed the design with the Whakatauki plate.

It means - Let the uniqueness of the child guide our work.

As a school Saint Mary’s is built on the ideals of Mary Mackillop. Children are the centre of everything we do and the beauty and uniqueness of their cultural backgrounds are honored and celebrated here.

Thank you everyone who has shared this journey with us, contributed materials, time, and skills to help this amazing sculpture find it’s resting place in front of our school.
